I use iPhoto for photo organization and I love it! But I am pushing 11,000 photos on my local hard drive. I am wondering about splitting my library or hosting it on my EHD.
Okay, so I did it! Yay! My iPhoto library was taking 60 GB of space on my hard drive, which is absurd when you consider that I have a TB EHD with 800 GB available.
So, I managed to copy it over and I checked that it was all intact (I back up offsite too) and then deleted the library off of my internal HD. I have so much space now!
The downside is that I have to have the EHD hooked up to my laptop anytime I want to work with photos (which is pretty much all the time!) but it's a portable small EHD so I guess that's not too bad.
If anyone else needs instructions you can follow these.
Awesome! I'm glad it worked. I've literally just started tagging my photos in Bridge, so it's in the metadata. Mostly because my mom wants pictures and I take wayyyyyy too many. um...I just checked and from 2006 on it's 128G. Matthias just had me check and 10 gigs are from February alone because I've been playing with my new camera. Yikes! What I won't tell you is that he wanted me to take the derivative of our photo storage with respect to time, or d/dt. Ok, I guess I told you. Yikes. Off to send more pictures to my mom. :p
ETA: I guess I should note that my camera takes HD video, and there are a few on there like Oliver singing "You've got a friend in me" at the top of his lungs. That definitely adds to the harddrive space. I feel better now about my photo taking tendencies, especially since I've been deleting like crazy.
