Megan (mturnidge) here to bring you some tips about saving your layered files with Photoshop or Photoshop Elements.
I bet a lot of you have noticed that Miss Mint’s fabulous templates come in both .PSD and .TIF format. When I was cleaning out my hard drive, I noticed that the .TIF files were considerably smaller than the .PSD files! So then I opened up the .TIF in PSE and it worked just fine… exactly like a .PSD! From then on, after downloading templates, I would immediately delete the .PSD and keep the .TIF file instead. Those .PSDs can be HUGE sometimes, so if you are able to view and use .TIF files in your graphic program, I highly recommend switching over to .TIF files.
You can also save your layered pages as .TIFs and save a lot of space on your hard drive. They can be about half the size of the same page saved as a .PSD! You do not lose any quality and it will remain layered. Another awesome advantage of saving as a .TIF is that I can view them in my Windows Photo Gallery and see what the LO looks like before opening it up in PSE. I have to open my .PSD files in PSE to view them, which is annoying because it can be slow to load layered files.
So, how do you save as a .TIF? When you go to save your page, select the .TIF format instead of the .PSD format and make sure you check the box to save in layers. A window will pop up and make sure you change your settings to: Image Compression- LZW, Pixel Order- Interleaved, Byte Order- IBM PC (I have a PC), Layer Compression- ZIP.
Your TIF options pop-up should look like this:
And that’s it! Start saving your pages as .TIFs and save yourself some much needed space! If you have time (and if your HD is getting full) you might even considering opening up your older .PSDs and saving them as .TIFs.
Please note that not all programs are capable of opening .TIF files (PS and PSE can).

This is awesome! I can’t believe how much space those psd files take up. I was just in the process of burning dvd’s for my psd files to remove them, but I’m going to try this instead. Thanks so much!
